Gold Leaf Cottagecore Toadstool Ornaments

Bringing a little garden magic to this year’s Christmas tree

I found this beautiful idea on Pinterest from The DIY Mommy blog a few months ago and wanted to give it a try myself. Lately, I have been in love with toadstools and think they’re especially cute with a golden cap instead of the traditional red and white.

These are super simple to make and look adorable on the tree, but they also make a cute gift topper for Christmas presents or hostess gifts. Just imagine how adorable it would look tied on a bottle of wine with a velvet bow! So simple, but thoughtful. Or even an add-on to a garden themed gift? So sweet!

Supply List

To make these ornaments, you will need the following items:

  • Wooden toadstool mushrooms (I found mine on Amazon)
  • Gold leaf sheets
  • Mod Podge
  • Decorative moss
  • Twine
  • Mini flowers
  • Hot glue
  • 2 paintbrushes (one to apply Mod Podge and another coarse, dry brush for the gold leaf)

I was able to find everything on Amazon. Links to all the supplies are listed below.

Instructions:

1.) First, you’ll want to cover the mushroom cap in a coat of Mod Podge using one of your paintbrushes. Be sure to get the underside of the cap as well.

TIP: Try to avoid getting any Mod Podge on the stem, it’s really hard to clean the gold leaf off the stem after it’s applied.

2.) Apply the gold leaf on the cap in layers. To do this, you’ll want to take a sheet of the gold leaf and lay it over the top of the cap, trying to cover as much of it as you can. The gold leaf is very delicate, so carefully press down on the leaf to adhear it to the mushroom. If you have spaces of glue that are not covered by the gold leaf, layer another smaller piece over it. The layers don’t need to look perfect – you’ll be able to “polish” the cap in the next step. Let the toadstools dry completely. I’ve found a couple hours is long enough, but it depends on how much Mod Podge you use.

3.) After the toadstools have fully dried, you can now use the coarse, dry paintbrush to remove the excess gold leaf from the cap. This step is messy, so I advise doing this over a plastic bag or garbage can. This step will make your toadstools look more “finished”

4.) Now you can add your twine to the top of the cap so that the toadstools can be hung as an ornament. Just tie a piece of twine in a loop and secure it to the cap with hot glue.

5.) Finish decorating the toadstool cap with moss and dried flowers.

Now you have cute cottagecore toadstool ornaments to add a little extra magic to your tree or presents this year!
